HW #2: Rethinking the Way We Sit Down

In this video, Niels talks bout how as a child, he fell in love with airplanes.  He explained how there was a certain "romance" about them, meaning that there was a factor of airplanes that truly made him happy.  Unfortunately, getting a job in the field of airplanes allowed him to discover that he did not feel the same about airplanes that he once had felt before.  The romance was gone, so he quit and went into the field of furniture since he spent a lot of time designing the interior of airplanes.  In turn, he designed a chair to conform to the human body that creates comfort for people so they do not have to keep adjusting themselves due to discomfort.  He designed this chair to have a headrest for cranium support and to recline a certain way so too much pressure is not put on a person's tailbone while sitting for extended periods of time.  The chair was designed with the same materials as bicycle seats so the weight of the person is evenly distributed throughout the chair to avoid eventual pain due to elongated periods sitting.

HW Response #1: How to Ruin a Great Design

While reading this article about bad designing, the most important concept that was discussed was consistency among designs.  For success, the key is consistency, especially if a logo is redesigned or updated every now and then.  It is important to withhold the same idea, but introduce it in a more invigorating, modern portrayal and still be captivating.  Whereas idea consistency is important, lettering is also another huge significant factor in designing. Lettering is what speaks to the eyes in terms of presentation and is also something that can either make or break a design.  For example, a logo could contain an image that meets the standards of perfection, but the lettering that goes along with could completely obliterate and stand out in a very unappealing way, such as caps where they do not belong in the word(s).  The only thing that would be noticable about the logo would be the poor consistency in the word, rather than the beautiful, captivating image.  Basically, you want your viewer(s) to be interested in your design and not revolted.

T.O. Question Answers

Questions

1. My computer experience includes Adobe Illustrator 4 and 6 (more familiar with 4), Paint.net, and Adobe Photoshop 6.  I took Computer Graphics 1 in High School as well as Digital Paint II, where we took our Photoshop creations and transferred them onto objects such as rocks, animal skulls, glass, metal, etc.  I also have computer experience with more general things like gaming, file management, and internet use, but I do not think it relates to this class.

2. I personally hope to be able to sharpen my art skills with graphic design and photoshopping to somewhat professional ability.

4. I used these programs in tenth and eleventh grade (2014-2016 during school time).

5. I do have a computer at home, my brother's iMac has Adobe Photoshop 5, but not Adobe Illustrator.

8. I personally hope to excel with my major beyond college and to get into designing logos, signs or entertaining images for public locations and or for websites.

9. My favorite artist would probably have to be Leonardo Da Vinci because I appreciate the mystery he portrays in his paintings.

10. My favorite musician is Brian Height.

11. I have been an airbrush artist for six years and I paint murals in my house.

12. Way back in 2008, I discovered a website called ROBLOX.com with my brother.  There was this membership called Builder's Club, so we begged my mom to buy it for us because it allowed us to design clothing for the avatars.  When I got the membership, I created clothes nonstop on MS Paint, but I made them really badly and ended up terminating my account.  My mother banned me from ever playing again when I was ten for this reason, so I decided to just draw cartoon characters on Paint.net for the heck of it.  Eight years later, I am sitting in a Computer Graphics class all because of that one website.  I would have never known how much I love graphic art if I did not start playing it!
